About Us

Our Story

Our Club was founded in 1944, during the golden era of Lawn Bowls. The game of bowls goes back a long time ago, long before you and our Club, thats for sure. Infact the most memorable game was in 1588 when Sir Frances Drake played Lord Howard at Plymouth Hoe while awaiting the arrival of the Spanish Amarda. Some say he lost the game, But we like to think that he won the game and the battle at sea too. Because the great Sir Frances Drake didn’t know the meaning of the word defeat.

The first meeting called to consider the formation of a Bowling Club in The Camp Hill District, was held in the Camp Hill School of Arts on Monday evening, 28th August, 1944. Twenty-six persons attended, the late Mr. Charles Theaker was appointed Provisional Chairman and Mr. V. Steele Provisional Hon. Secretary.

A motion moved by Mr. Theaker and seconded by Mr. Greenfield, “That a Bowling Club, to be called the Camp Hill Bowling Club, be formed,” was carried unanimously, and this splendid club was born. Provisional Committees to handle Bowling Green, Sites, Finance and Membership were set up, and Mr. S. Carter generously offered the Club the use of his private Bowling Green until greens could be constructed by the club, and this offer was gratefully accepted.
